Kensington (Olympia) to Earl’s Court

I start at Kensington (Olympia). It is named after the Olympia Exhibition Building which is next to the station. This Exhibition building is run by the same people who run the nearby Earl’s Court Exhibition Building.

I head south and briefly pass along Kensington High Street before going into Warwick Road. Warwick Road has a Homebase and a Tesco superstore and a number of housing blocks.

Beyond the housing blocks is the Earl’s Court Exhibition Building. It doesn’t look like there is a show on today as the gates are closed.

I pass the west entrance of Earl’s Court tube station, walk along Penywern Road and then get to the east entrance of Earl’s Court.

Earl’s Court to High Street Kensington

I pass the Dr Who Police Box outside Earl’s Court underground station and then walk north up Earl’s Court Road. Along the way I spot this van which had two toy dogs positioned just in front of it. I have no idea why.

I get back onto High Street Kensington head east past the many shops and then arrive at High Street Kensington tube station.

High Street Kensington to Notting Hill Gate

I pass the former Barker’s department store and then turn left into Kensington Church Street.

This area is well known for its antique shops, a few of them are pictured here.

At the end of Kensington Church Street I turn left and reach Notting Hill Gate tube station.

Notting Hill Gate to Bayswater

On Notting Hill Gate I turn into Ossington Street and then right into Moscow Road.

On Moscow Road I pass a church and several more mansion blocks (Bayswater is home to loads of them) before reaching Bayswater tube station which is on the Queensway.

Bayswater to Paddington

I walk a short way up Queensway and turn right into Porchester Gardens passing a mansion block and the 1950’s Hallfield Estate.

On Eastbourne Terrace many of the old office blocks have been renovated with new glass fronts. On Praed Street I reach Paddington tube station.

Paddington to Edgware Road

I continue along Praed Street passing the local shops and the famous St. Mary’s Hospital where Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin.

At the far end of this road some of the new blocks of flats which surround the Paddington Basin come into view. I also pass the Hilton London Metropole Hotel.

I cross Edgware Road, walk along Chapel Street, and then reach Edgware Road tube station; the final tube station on my tube walking journey.

District Line Walk - Day 6 Summary

This final section of the District line tube walk took me just over one and a half hours to complete.

The next branch on the District line is the Wimbledon branch. I leave Wimbledon tube station passing through the shopping area and over Wimbledon Bridge.

I walk along Alexandra Road and Strathearn Road passing a carriage cleaning shed.

On Home Park Road I arrive at Wimbledon Park tube station.

Wimbledon Park to Southfields

Wimbledon is most famous for its association with the Wimbledon tennis championships. Unsurprisingly there are loads of tennis courts in Wimbledon Park. There is also a bowling green, a lake and a golf course.

I leave the park and walk up Elsenham Street before arriving at Southfields tube station.

Southfields to East Putney

I walk through some residential areas on Sutherland Grove and Keswick Road.

At the end of Keswick Road I turn left and get to East Putney tube station.

East Putney to Putney Bridge

Upper Richmond Road and Putney High Street are major shopping areas.

I walk over Putney Bridge which takes me across the River Thames.

Down a small street is Putney Bridge tube station.

Putney Bridge to Parsons Green

I head towards Kings Road.

I pass the triangular area of grass that gives Parsons Green its name before arriving at Parsons Green underground station.

Parsons Green to Fulham Broadway

On Parsons Green Lane are some large red brick buildings. On Fulham Road are shops and restaurants.

Just after Fulham Broadway is Fulham Broadway tube station.

Fulham Broadway to West Brompton

Walking along Fulham Road the most noticable building is Chelsea Football Club, owned by Russian oil billionaire Roman Abramovich.

After passing the stadium, known as Stamford Bridge I head into Brompton Cemetery which is one of the most famous cemetaries in London.

I leave the cenetery turn left and get to West Brompton tube station.

West Brompton to Earl’s Court

I walk past the south side of the Earl’s Court Exhibition building and then walk through Eardley Crescent.

At the end of Eardley Crescent I arrive at the west entrance to Earl’s Court tube station.

Turnham Green to Gunnersbury

I walk down Goldhawk Road and onto Chiswick High Road passing many shops.

After passing a war memmorial I see a very oddly coloured house on Heathfield Terrace.

On Harvard Road I see a Greek Orthodox Church with a very bright dome. You need to be observant to find Gunnersbury tube station from here. There is a very small alley that leads to it. The main entrance must be on Chiswick High Road. I pass along the alley and reach the station.

Gunnersbury to Kew Gardens

I head towards Kew Bridge passing a number of shops. When I cross the bridge it looks like it is low tide.

There are a number of boats moored at the Kew Gardens Pier.

This is a very leafy area best known for Kew Gardens itself. The Gardens can’t be seen from my vantage point due to this large wall surrounding them.

In a small shopping area I find Kew Gardens tube station.

Kew Gardens to Richmond

I walk south along Sandycombe Road which is a residential street.

I then turn right into Lower Mortlake Road and head towards Richmond.

Here is Richmond station the final stop on this branch of the District line.

Near the end of Hardwicke Road I reach Chiswick Park tube station.

Chiswick Park to Acton Town

I walk up Bollo Lane. There are two level crossings on this road and I have to wait several minutes at one for a train to go past.

At the end of Bollow Lane I turn left and reach Acton Town tube station.

Acton Town to Ealing Common

I walk along a number of small roads passing mainly semi-detached houses but there are some detached ones as well.

On Uxbridge Road I reach Ealing Common tube station.

Ealing Common to Ealing Broadway

On Uxbridge Road I pass this funfair which is on Ealing Common.

After Ealing Common the street becomes a shopping area.

In the middle of Ealing town centre is Ealing Broadway tube station the last stop on this branch of the District line.
